Guide – What does 3D cost?

What does a car cost?

The price of 3D visualization and animation depends on a number of factors, just like the price of a car varies depending on model, equipment and features. We offer 3D solutions in all price ranges, from simple visualizations to advanced animations. We find the solution that fits your needs and your budget.

At RR3D we strive to deliver high-quality 3D services that meet your specific needs and visions. The price of a 3D animation can vary depending on a number of factors, and we want to ensure full transparency in our pricing structure.

On this page we review the primary elements that affect the final price, including project specification, timeline and deadline, budget, style, level of detail, frame rate / frames per second, format and output, revisions etc.

Which factors affect the price?

Time, price and quality – three factors that naturally go together. A shorter deadline may require extra resources and thus a higher price. If you want higher quality with more details, it requires more time and thus also a higher price.

We always work to find the optimal balance between time, price and quality that matches your needs. Who and what determines when something is good enough? And finished? The price of 3D and 3D animation can vary greatly depending on many factors, these include:

  • Project specification – How well is your project specified?

  • Technical factors – e.g. level of detail, style, resolution, frames per second, length of animation.

  • Time and deadline and budget.

These factors affect the price:

  • Project type – 3D rendering, 3D animation, Interactive 3D presentation, 3D configurator, or a VR or AR experience?

  • Project description – Do you have a detailed description of the project, including purpose, target audience and desired outcome, or do we need to help develop this?

  • Budget – Do you have a budget for the project?

  • Project specification – Do you have reference material, such as images, 3D files or video?

  • Meetings and video meetings – How do we communicate? Physical meetings, email, phone or video meetings?

  • Deadline – When does the project need to be completed?

  • Style – What style do you want for the animation? (e.g., realistic, stylized).

  • Level of detail and scope – The number of objects and their complexity.

  • Animation length (animation only) – How long should the animation be?

  • Frame rate / Frames per second (animation only) – What frame rate do you want? (e.g., 24 FPS, 30 FPS)

  • Resolution and format: What resolution and format should the animation be delivered in? (e.g., HD, 4K, MP4, MOV)

  • Image format: What image format/aspect ratio should be used? 1:1, 16:9, horizontal or vertical?

  • Sound and music – Should the animation include sound, music, or voice-over?

  • Interactive elements: Should interactive elements be added, e.g., buttons, links, or hotspots?

  • Target audience – Who is the target audience for the animation?

  • Usage – Where will the animation be used? (e.g., website, social media, TV commercial).

  • Non-disclosure Agreement (NDA) – Do you want to sign an NDA to protect confidential information?

  • Code of Conduct – Does your company have a Code of Conduct that we should be aware of?

  • Copyright: Who owns the copyright to the finished animation, and do we have permission to share the material on our website afterwards?

Time, price and quality – how 3D is priced

Time, price and quality – three factors that naturally go together. A shorter deadline may require extra resources and thus a higher price. If you want higher quality with more details, it requires more time and thus also a higher price.

We always work to find the optimal balance between time, price and quality that matches your needs. Who and what determines when something is good enough? And finished? The price of 3D and 3D animation can vary greatly depending on many factors, these include:

  • Project specification – How well is your project specified?

  • Technical factors – e.g. level of detail, style, resolution, frames per second, length of animation.

  • Time and deadline and budget.

Budget

If you can provide your budget, it’s the best way for us to help maximize what you get for your money.

We don’t try to maximize the budget, but it gives us the opportunity to find the best solution for both of us.

To ensure an optimal process, we encourage you to contact us with a detailed description of your project, as well as your budget. We will gladly provide you with a customized and non-binding proposal that matches your needs and budget.

  • Provide your budget – this ensures an efficient process for quotation.

  • We have full respect for it, if you don’t want to provide your project, but it will require extra time for us to prepare the quote.

Project specification

Do you have a clear idea and a finished project description of your project?

If you want help specifying the project, we can enter into a pre-production and idea phase, where we in close dialogue and partnership clarify and specify the project’s scope in the form of creative and technical concept development, storyboards etc. – everything is gathered in a common project description that forms the basis for quotation.

  • How well is your project specified?

  • Initial dialogue and needs assessment

  • Initial project description and quote

  • Joint definition of goals and deliverables

  • Data collection – e.g. 3D CAD files, images or other things needed for the project.

Meetings and video conferencing

Good dialogue is the cornerstone of good collaboration – You are always welcome to visit our office in Herning, but we can also come visit you. However, in most cases we will start with an initial video meeting.

  • Fast and efficient communication.

  • Possibility to screen share.

  • Avoid unnecessary transportation.

Timeline and deadline

If you have a tight deadline that may require overtime or extra resources to reach the goal, this can naturally affect the price.

A more flexible timeline allows for efficient production planning and optimal resource utilization, which can help reduce the price.

Frequent revisions and changes during the process can extend production time and increase the price.

  • Start the project in good time.

  • A tight deadline will increase the price of the project.

  • Frequent revisions or major changes during the project can affect the price.

Style

In addition to the level of detail, the style plays a crucial role for both the visual expression and the price of a 3D animation. The choice of style depends on the project’s purpose, target audience and budget.

Please show us examples of animations you like, and explain what mood and aesthetic you want.

  • Find examples of the style you want, or make a thorough description of it.

  • Target audience: Who is the target audience for the animation? An animation for children can use a cartoon style, while an animation for professionals can use a more realistic style.

  • Purpose: What is the purpose of the animation? A product demonstration might require a photorealistic style, while an explainer video can use a more stylized or cartoon-like style.

Examples of different styles and trends:

  • Photorealistic: This style aims to create animations that look as realistic as possible. It requires advanced modeling, texturing and lighting to achieve a lifelike appearance.
  • Stylized: This style gives more artistic freedom and can vary from cartoon-like to abstract. It can include simplified shapes, exaggerated proportions or a unique color choice.
  • Cartoon: This style is inspired by cartoons and animations. It is often characterized by simple shapes, clear colors and exaggerated movements.
  • Low poly: This style uses a low number of polygons to create a minimalist and geometric appearance. It can be an effective way to create stylish animations on a limited budget.
  • Motion graphics: This style focuses on animating graphics, text and logos. It is often used in explainer videos, presentations and advertisements.

Level of detail

The level of detail in 3D models and 3D animations is a crucial factor for the final result – and for the price. The more detailed and complex a 3D model or 3D animation needs to be, the more time and expertise it requires to produce it.

The optimal level of detail depends on the project’s purpose and budget. It is important to find a balance between the desired level of realism and the economic framework.

  • Scope – The number of characters, objects and environments in the animation has a direct impact on the necessary work effort.

  • Find examples of the level of detail you want, or make a thorough description of it.

  • Platform – if a project is exclusively to be used for a 3D animation, there are fewer requirements for optimization of the 3D models, compared to if it needs to be displayed interactively in a web browser.

Length of animation

The level of detail in 3D models and 3D animations is a crucial factor for the final result – and for the price. The more detailed and complex a 3D model or 3D animation needs to be, the more time and expertise it requires to produce it.

The optimal level of detail depends on the project’s purpose and budget. It is important to find a balance between the desired level of realism and the economic framework.

NOTE! Especially with technical animation films, we often see that they are underestimated – technical animation films often require longer time to understand than commercials, and it is typical for a technical animation film of a product that these are over 3 minutes long.

  • Scope – The number of characters, objects and environments in the animation has a direct impact on the necessary work effort.

  • Find examples of the level of detail you want, or make a thorough description of it.

Resolution and format

When you order a 3D animation, it is important to consider what resolution and format you need. These factors play a role in both the visual expression and the price of the animation.

Resolution:

Resolution indicates the number of pixels in the image. A higher resolution gives a sharper and more detailed image, while a lower resolution can result in a more pixelated or blurry image. Screen technology is constantly evolving, and 4K resolution (3840 x 2160 px) is now standard in many films, but regular HD resolution (1920 x 1080 px) is in many cases still sufficient to get a sharp image.

  • HD – 1080 x 1920 px

  • 4K – 3840 x 2160 px

  • 8K – 7680 × 4320 px

Frame rate (frames per second)

The choice of frame rate is a balance between aesthetics, functionality and budget. By understanding how frame rate affects price, a choice can be made and ensure that the animation meets both creative and economic goals. A higher frame rate means that more images must be produced to create the animation. This increases production time and thus also costs.

Desired aesthetic: A higher frame rate (e.g. 60 FPS) gives a more fluid animation, while a lower frame rate (e.g. 24 or 12 FPS) can give a more cinematic or stylized expression.

Typical frame rates are:

  • 12 FPS

  • 24 FPS

  • 30 FPS

  • 60 FPS

Revisions

Our goal is to create a result you are proud of.

3D animation is an iterative process, where adjustments and fine-tuning often occur along the way. Feedback and revisions are an important part of the process that ensures the final result lives up to expectations.

Throughout the process we ensure close dialogue and ongoing feedback, so you are always involved and updated. We continuously present results and involve you in the process to ensure we are on the right track.

Number of revisions:

The number of included revisions depends on the project’s scope and complexity. This will be agreed upon in the initial contract – in a typical project there are 5 revisions, before

Additional revisions:

Sometimes new ideas or approaches emerge when a project has already started – if there is a need for additional revisions beyond what was agreed, this can be arranged for an extra fee – this will always be clearly agreed in advance, and we never add extra costs to a project without both parties agreeing to it first.

Pricing structure

Our price examples are divided into 3 categories/price ranges. We do this because, out of discretion for our customers, we do not disclose final project prices.

Since an individual assessment is made per project, fixed prices cannot be given. The following list provides a description of the different price levels:

$ = Indicates a project that is relatively simple – for example where the level of detail is low, or that the customer has provided 3D drawings themselves, or other factors that can help reduce the total costs. This also applies to deadline, the total length of the animation etc.

$$ = Indicates a project that is more complex and has greater requirements for level of detail.

$$$ = Indicates a complex project that requires a lot of time and many resources.
