Splats – a new generation of 3D presentation

What is a 3D splat? A splat (3D Gaussian Splat) is capturing a small piece of reality, transferred to the digital world, exactly as it appears. Think of it as millions of microscopic “light points”. Each point knows exactly where it belongs in 3D space, what color it has, and how it reflects light.

The result is not a traditional 3D model, but a “3D photograph” that recreates reality with unparalleled photorealistic detail. Reflections, shine, fine textiles, and individual hair strands can be rendered in high detail.

This creates a digital experience that is so vivid and precise that it captures attention and provides a completely new level of understanding and engagement.

The model can be rotated and viewed from all angles.

Capture the imperfect in perfect detail

  • Unparalleled realism: Splats render light, shadows, transparency, and details with photographic precision.

Lightning-fast production: It’s possible to create 3D environments in very short time compared to traditional methods.

Lightweight files: Despite the realism, the files are surprisingly small – easy to share and implement on websites, video, or VR experiences.

Future-proof: Splats are a groundbreaking technology that sets new standards for visual experiences.

Splats of people and clothing

With splats of people, it’s possible to digitize a person in very high detail – clothing, hair, and beard are rendered with very high detail. We use specialized equipment with many cameras to capture the person, after which the 3D model can be used for many purposes, for example showcasing clothing or preserving a person’s appearance for the future.

  • Present clothing collections online with interactivity and high detail – whether it’s sports equipment, work clothes, evening dresses, or fine uniforms, all details are captured.

  • Preserve people digitally – create invaluable digital memories of family members for future generations. A unique way to preserve grandparents’ appearance.

  • Create lifelike digital twins for games, VR/AR applications, and the Metaverse.

In our studio in Herning, we have specialized equipment for capturing splats of people.

Is a splat a 3D scan?

Yes, a splat is technically a 3D scan, however it differs significantly from traditional 3D scanning, which often has difficulty capturing details like hair, fur, fine textiles, and how light reflects or passes through transparent materials – a Splat is a volumetric digital copy that preserves authentic photorealism, whereas a 3D scan creates a “mesh” or skeleton of the 3D model.

Splats are primarily intended for more visual purposes, for example for showcasing products, while 3D scanning is often more technically oriented, where high precision is required.

Can traditional 3D be made as splats?

Yes – traditional 3D models, e.g., made in Blender, 3dsMax, or 3D CAD models from for example Inventor, can be rendered as a splat.

Due to the fact that splats are fundamentally different from traditional 3D when it comes to display in an online 3D viewer, a very high degree of realism can be achieved compared to ordinary 3D viewers.

This also provides the opportunity to integrate the model into online 3D viewers or VR applications, with unprecedented detail.

Time lapse

3D splats can be made as time lapse, where recordings are made at different times. 3D splat time-lapses can for example capture changing seasons and document changes in landscapes, parks, or urban spaces with incredible realism.

Construction

Time lapse of construction projects

Follow the development of a construction project with unprecedented detail and realism. 3D splat time-lapses of construction projects transform months or years into minutes, and provide a complete, interactive overview of the process.

Digital Twins

Creation of digital twins of industrial facilities and processes (for monitoring sensors, maintenance, optimization, training/education, and much more).

CONTACT US Flexible Pricing Structure We recommend that you contact us for a consultation to align expectations about your project and receive a complete quote.

Prices

Several factors affect the final price, this includes among other things:

  • Deadline – What is your time horizon?

  • Location and handling of object – Is the recording made directly on location, or is it recorded in our studio in Herning? If it’s recorded outside, wind and weather must be taken into account. Or are there special requirements for handling the objects – for example object size, weight, or other things that have practical significance?

  • Number of splats – We offer volume discounts for multiple splats recorded on the same day.

  • Size and type of object – Small, medium, or large object, building/area, car/boat/plane, bicycle or motorcycle, person, etc.

  • Complexity of splat – For example, whether the object has many reflections, has a very special shape, the object’s placement, or physical handling of the object.

  • Post-processing of splat – Should the splat be isolated/extracted so it has a transparent background?

  • Background or environment requirements – If the splat is not isolated/extracted, are there high requirements for the surroundings? For example, for splats of furniture, if the furniture is desired to be shown in an environment/context, rather than just an isolated product?

  • Quality – Depending on the purpose and type of object, there may be different quality requirements – for example, if all angles of the object should be visible, or only be visible from certain angles – for example, objects that have internal parts, like a bag.

  • Integration – How is the final splat used? As an interactive 3D viewer on a website, or as a video, or as a VR experience?

  • Rights – Access to original raw images/videos or PLY files (point cloud).

Clear expectation alignment

We always ensure clear expectation alignment.

We can enter into a pre-production and idea phase, where we in close dialogue and partnership clarify the project’s scope in terms of creative and technical concept development, storyboards, etc. – everything is gathered in a shared project description that forms the basis for quotation.

  • Initial dialogue and needs assessment

  • Initial project description and quote

  • Joint definition of goals and deliverables

Large studio facilities for every purpose In our large studio facilities, we can handle objects of almost all sizes -everything from caravans to jewelry.

Summary and frequently asked questions:

Interactive 3D viewers, videos, images, or VR experiences, Virtual Production, Digital twins, etc. – in many cases, 3DGS is not a replacement for ordinary product photos, but more like a new version of traditional 360-degree viewers of products, which have been seen from webshops for many years.

The actual process of recording a single splat usually doesn’t take long (often only a few minutes) – however, there is often initial preparation work and afterwards data must be post-processed. After that, there may be other technical or creative elements that need to be integrated, which naturally increases the time consumption. Please contact us and tell us more about your project if you want a more precise estimate.

Very shiny and reflective objects can be a challenge, and require extra work to record optimally.

Additionally, very uniform surfaces without texture like certain fabric materials or car paint can give results that in some cases are not optimal.

No – 3D splats can be displayed in all modern browsers – however, there may be differences in the experience, depending on the user’s hardware.

No, Gaussian Splatting is a completely new technology from 2023, where a large part of the development is driven by other industries, e.g., self-driving cars – our expertise is to record, generate, and implement these splats for various practical and creative purposes.

It’s possible to splat entire buildings and areas – in theory, there’s no limit to how large it can be – depending on quality and scope, there may be limitations in displaying the splat in an online 3D viewer.

Yes, it’s possible to make so-called 4D Splats (4D Gaussian Splats), which can be animated – however, this requires a 4D studio, a studio with many cameras from many angles, or animated from a 3D program.

3D Gaussian Splatting is very new and in constant development and has only recently become practically possible to implement.

3D Gaussian Splatting is very new (from 2023) and in constant development, and has only recently become practically possible to implement.

Here the answer is more nuanced – yes, it’s possible to 3D print a splat, however it’s associated with certain limitations. For example, if a splat of a person with long hair or beard is to be made as a 3D print, the model will be converted to an ordinary 3D model, which “smooths out” elements like beard or hair, so it’s possible to 3D print. If high precision requirements are set for the model, a splat is often not the best solution, and here traditional 3D scanning techniques are often more precise. Some objects are therefore better suited for 3D printing than others, and if textures or colors are desired, a splat converted to an ordinary 3D model can sometimes give good results.

Yes, 3D splats can be integrated into webshops like WooCommerce and Shopify. We can assist with the integration to ensure the best user experience.
